Health isn’t just about what lives inside our bodies but also what exists outside and around us. This Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 13, 2018, we revisited the wisdom of “WHAT MAMA TAUGHT US”—cleanliness, care, and love. Inspired by how mothers protect their children from harmful objects and substances, we took it upon ourselves to transcend those lessons for the benefit of our environment and maternal health.
Under the theme “ZERO LITTER FOR MAMA’S HEALTH,” we launched an open-street cleanup campaign to trigger awareness about poor waste disposal habits and their harmful impacts on maternal and child health, as well as the environment. The campaign was a call to action for all mothers, families, and communities to make a significant gesture of love and respect for mothers everywhere.
To ensure safety and participation, our dedicated volunteers were provided with free safety equipment, including gloves, nose masks, and jackets. T-shirts were also made available upon request. The cleanup initiative covered a designated route from Rond Point Maetur Bonamoussadi to Makepe Rond Poulenc in Douala, Cameroon. Along the way, we engaged community members in meaningful conversations about the importance of proper waste disposal practices. These street debates highlighted the dire consequences of littering for maternal health, public safety, and climate change. With every effort to clean the streets, we hope to foster improved maternal and child health, cultivate better environmental habits, and contribute to a cleaner and healthier future. Our environment is our health, and together, we can make a difference!
